Skógafoss drops the Skógá about 60 m in a single sheet some 25 m wide off what was once the coastline; the sea now lies about 5 km to the south across a plain of river sediment. On sunny days the spray throws up rainbows. A legend says the settler Þrasi hid a chest of gold behind the falls.

How to visit in real life

Skógafoss is beside the ring road on Iceland's south coast. You can walk up to the foot of the falls and climb a long stairway to a viewpoint at the top.
