Mount Vinson is the highest point in Antarctica, 4,892 m, in the Ellsworth Mountains. An American expedition led by Nicholas Clinch first climbed it on 18 December 1966, and its height was fixed by GPS in 2004. The ice sheet lies about 2,000 m below, and the South Pole is some 1,200 km away; this walk has the low polar sun.
