What you'll find in the walk

Gold markers in the scene open these cards.

  1. Uhuru Peak · 5,895 m

    Known

The highest point in Africa, on the rim of Kibo's crater. First reached on 6 October 1889 by Hans Meyer and Ludwig Purtscheller, guided by Yohani Lauwo.

  2. The Furtwängler Glacier

    Known

A last block of ice on the crater floor, named after Walter Furtwängler, who climbed here in 1912. More than 80 percent of the mountain's ice has gone since 1912.

  3. When the ice will go

    Theorised

Researchers measuring the remaining glaciers expect them to disappear within a few decades. Drier air and less snowfall, more than warmer temperatures, seem to drive the loss.

How to visit in real life

Kilimanjaro is climbed on several routes over five to nine days, with a licensed guide and porters, which the park requires. No technical climbing is needed, but altitude sickness is a real risk.
