Aconcagua, 6,961 m, is the highest mountain outside Asia. Matthias Zurbriggen made the first recorded ascent, alone, on 14 January 1897, but in 1985 climbers found the burial of an Inca child at about 5,300 m on one of its ridges: proof that people climbed this high some 500 years ago.

How to visit in real life

Aconcagua lies in a provincial park in Argentina that issues climbing permits for the summer season. The normal route is not technical but long and very high; trekkers also walk to its base camps.
