D27 at Borger is the largest: 22.5 m long, with nine capstones on 26 uprights, raised around 3400 BC by the Funnelbeaker people. The stones are Scandinavian granite carried here by the ice sheet; hunebed means giant's bed.

  1. The largest hunebed

    Known

Fifty-two hunebedden survive in the Netherlands, almost all in Drenthe. This one, D27, is the biggest: 22.5 m long, nine capstones on 26 uprights, raised around 3400 BC by the Funnelbeaker people.

  2. Ice-age boulders

    Known

The stones are Scandinavian granite, carried here by the ice sheet some 150,000 years ago. The builders had no other rock on this sandy plain.

  3. Giants' beds

    Folklore

Hunebed means giant's bed. For centuries locals assumed only huunen, giants, could have lifted the capstones, each of which weighs up to 20 tonnes.

How to visit in real life

D27 stands in woodland at Borger, free to walk round, next to a museum about the hunebedden. Many of the others lie along cycle routes across Drenthe.
