Bruges · the Markt in 3D

West Flanders · the Belfry

Bruges, West Flanders, Belgium

The Markt is the old market square of Bruges, one of the richest cities in northern Europe in the 1300s. Its Belfry, begun around 1240 over the cloth hall, rises 83 m and leans about a metre to the east; a 47-bell carillon still plays from the top. When the sea channel silted up in the 1500s the money left, and the medieval town was preserved by poverty.

What you'll find in the walk

Gold markers in the scene open these cards.

  1. The Belfry · 83 m

    Known

The tower leans about a metre to the east. Begun around 1240 over the cloth hall and market, it got its octagonal lantern in 1486; a 47-bell carillon still plays from the top.

  2. The Markt

    Known

Bruges was one of the richest cities in northern Europe in the 1300s, trading wool and cloth with England and Italy. When its sea channel silted up in the 1500s, the money left and the medieval town was preserved by poverty.

  3. The stepped gables

    Known

Narrow brick houses with stair-stepped gables line the square. Most fronts are 17th-century or later rebuilds on medieval plots; the massing here is simplified.

How to visit in real life

Bruges is a short train ride from Brussels and Ghent, and the Markt is a few minutes' walk through the old town from the station. The Belfry tower can be climbed.
