You cannot time a 40 off game film the way a coach times one on a track. What you can do is measure how fast the player is genuinely moving, using the yard lines as a ruler, then convert that top speed into an estimated 40. Done carefully, the number is defensible — as long as you say how you got it.
Why film timing is not a stopwatch
A tested 40 is a controlled event: a standing start, a straight line, forty yards, one timing method. Highlight film is none of those things. Runs are cut mid-stride, the camera pans and zooms, the player is rarely accelerating from a standstill, and the best play is usually in slow motion.
So the honest method is not to hunt for a 40-yard sprint that probably is not on the tape. It is to measure speed over a stretch where the field markings are visible, then convert. You end up with an estimate and a stated method, which is worth more than a stopwatch number nobody can check.
What the clip has to show
Four things, and if any one is missing the measurement is not worth taking.
- Field markings in frame during the run. Yard lines are five yards apart on every football field ever built, and the short hash marks between them run in one-yard increments. That is your ruler.
- An uncut run. The player has to stay in shot from your start point to your end point. A cut in the middle makes the elapsed time meaningless.
- A known, constant frame rate. You are counting frames, so you need to know what a frame is worth.
- Real time, not a replay. See below.
Step by step
- Pick the run. Find the longest straight-line stretch where the player is at full stride and yard lines are visible. A kick return or a long run after the catch usually beats anything in the box.
- Choose two reference lines. Pick lines the player clearly crosses, as far apart as the clip allows. Ten yards is a workable minimum; twenty is much better.
- Track the hip, not the foot. Feet swing forward and back relative to the body, so a foot-strike reference adds error on both ends. The hip travels at the body's actual speed.
- Find the in and out frames. Step frame by frame to the frame where the hip crosses the first line, then the frame where it crosses the second.
- Convert frames to seconds. Frames counted divided by frame rate. Fourteen frames at 30 fps is 0.467 seconds.
- Divide. Distance in yards divided by seconds gives yards per second — the number everything else is built from.
How much error your frame rate buys you
Every frame count carries at least one frame of uncertainty at each end. At 30 fps a frame is about 0.033 seconds; at 60 fps, about 0.017. That error is fixed, so the longer the measured distance, the smaller its share of the result.
A ten-yard segment run at roughly 9 yards per second takes about 1.1 seconds, so a single missed frame at 30 fps shifts the answer by around 3 percent. Over twenty yards the same frame is worth about half that. Measure over distance whenever the tape allows it.
Turning yards per second into something readable
Yards per second is the measurement; miles per hour is how people talk about it. One yard per second is a little over two miles per hour.

Top speed alone does not give you a 40, because a 40 is a start, an acceleration and a top-speed phase stacked together. A player who reaches 9 yards per second slowly will run a worse 40 than one who reaches 8.7 quickly. That is why acceleration and braking are worth measuring separately rather than folding into one headline number.
Throw out every slow-motion stretch
This is the step most people skip, and it is the one that ruins the number. Almost every highlight reel slows the best play down. If you measure a slowed stretch as if it were real time, you get a speed that is wildly low; if the slowdown sits in the middle of your measured segment, the elapsed time is inflated and the answer is quietly wrong.
You cannot always see it, either — a smooth 2x slowdown on a distant run looks plausible. The reliable way to catch it is to measure the film itself rather than trust your eye, and exclude anything time-based that falls inside a slowed stretch.
Say what the number is
Anything measured this way is an estimate derived from video, not an officially timed result. Accuracy depends on camera angle, framing, visible field markings and video quality. Report the method, the distance measured and the frame rate alongside the figure, and never present it as a combine-timed or laser-timed number.
Doing it without counting frames
