How to measure pitch speed with a phone

To measure pitch speed with a phone, film the pitch from the side so the camera looks across the ball's flight path, keep the release point and the plate both in frame, shoot at 60 frames per second or higher in good light, and let a video-analysis app estimate the velocity. Put the camera in the right place

Film from the side, roughly perpendicular to the line from the mound to the plate. A camera behind the pitcher or behind the plate sees the ball coming almost straight at it, which gives the software very little frame-to-frame movement to work with.

Shoot at a high frame rate

Frame rate is the single biggest quality lever, because the ball's speed is inferred from how far it travels between frames. At 30 frames per second, a 70 mph pitch covers roughly three and a half feet between one frame and the next, so the software has only a handful of samples across the entire flight. At 240 frames per second that gap shrinks to about five inches.

Light the scene and clear the background

A ball that appears as a blurred streak is harder to locate precisely than a crisp one. Daylight is ideal; direct sun behind the camera rather than behind the pitcher is better still.

Know your pitching distance

Distance is the reference that converts movement on screen into miles per hour, and it changes by level. Confirm which distance your league uses before you compare a reading to anyone else's.

What a phone reading can and cannot do

A video estimate is good enough to track a pitcher against their own history and to compare pitches within one outing. It is not a certified measurement, and it should not be submitted anywhere that expects a verified number.

Two readings taken with different setups are not comparable. Radar guns share the problem for a different reason: a reading near release is faster than one near the plate, because the ball slows in flight. Whatever tool you use, hold the method constant and compare trends rather than absolute values.

A repeatable session

  1. Mount the phone on the first-base or third-base line, perpendicular to the flight path, with release point and plate both in frame.
  2. Set 60 fps or higher and check that the ball looks sharp, not smeared, on a test pitch.
  3. Record the whole bullpen or game in one continuous clip rather than starting and stopping.
  4. Upload the video for analysis and note the setup you used, so the next session can match it.
  5. Compare the trend across sessions, not one pitch against another player's best day.
