The three ways to get a number
There are only three practical options, and they trade cost against precision.
- A traditional radar gun. The most accurate and the most expensive, and someone has to stand in position and point it at every pitch.
- A pocket radar device. Smaller and cheaper than a full gun, still hardware you have to buy, carry, aim, and charge.
- Phone video plus software. No hardware beyond the phone already in your pocket. The software estimates speed from the ball's movement across frames, so the quality of your video sets the quality of your number.

Put the camera in the right place
Film from the side, roughly perpendicular to the line from the mound to the plate. A camera behind the pitcher or behind the plate sees the ball coming almost straight at it, which gives the software very little frame-to-frame movement to work with.
- Set the tripod near the first-base or third-base line, level with a point between mound and plate.
- Frame the shot so the release point and home plate are both visible for the entire pitch. If the ball leaves the frame mid-flight, the pitch is unusable.
- Hold the phone steady, ideally on a tripod or fence mount. Handheld panning while the ball is in the air adds motion the software has to untangle from the ball's own motion.
- Keep the camera in the same spot for every pitch in a session. Consistency between pitches matters more than any single setup choice.
Shoot at a high frame rate
Frame rate is the single biggest quality lever, because the ball's speed is inferred from how far it travels between frames. At 30 frames per second, a 70 mph pitch covers roughly three and a half feet between one frame and the next, so the software has only a handful of samples across the entire flight. At 240 frames per second that gap shrinks to about five inches.
- Use 60 fps as a floor. Most phones default to 30.
- Slow-motion modes at 120 or 240 fps are better, and they usually force a shorter shutter time, which also sharpens the ball.
- Higher frame rates need more light. Indoors or at dusk a phone often drops the effective frame rate or produces a smeared ball, which costs more than the frame rate gained.
Light the scene and clear the background
A ball that appears as a blurred streak is harder to locate precisely than a crisp one. Daylight is ideal; direct sun behind the camera rather than behind the pitcher is better still.
- Avoid shooting into the sun or into stadium lights.
- Prefer a plain background such as grass, dirt, or an empty fence line over a crowd, parked cars, or a chain-link fence directly behind the flight path.
- Wipe the lens. A smudge costs more sharpness than most people expect.
Know your pitching distance
Distance is the reference that converts movement on screen into miles per hour, and it changes by level. Confirm which distance your league uses before you compare a reading to anyone else's.

What a phone reading can and cannot do
A video estimate is good enough to track a pitcher against their own history and to compare pitches within one outing. It is not a certified measurement, and it should not be submitted anywhere that expects a verified number.
Two readings taken with different setups are not comparable. Radar guns share the problem for a different reason: a reading near release is faster than one near the plate, because the ball slows in flight. Whatever tool you use, hold the method constant and compare trends rather than absolute values.
