Fastball velocity climbs roughly five miles per hour a year through the teens. A typical 10-year-old sits around 45 to 55 mph, a 14-year-old around 60 to 70 mph, and a high school junior or senior is usually somewhere in the 70s. The ranges overlap heavily, and mound distance changes with age.
Typical fastball ranges by age
The numbers below are the approximate ranges youth coaches use as a rough map. They are not standards, and no one should read a single reading as a verdict on a player.

For scale at the top end: the average major league fastball has sat in the mid-90s in recent seasons, and the fastest arms in the game touch triple digits. That is a professional adult population selected from millions of players, so it is a poor yardstick for anyone in youth ball.
Why the ranges overlap so much
Age is a weak predictor of velocity because the things that actually produce it are not on the same schedule as the calendar. Four factors do most of the scattering.
- Puberty timing. Two 13-year-olds can be four years apart in physical maturity. Height, mass, and limb length all feed velocity, and the early developer usually leads the age group for a while before the gap closes.
- Mound distance. Younger divisions pitch from 46 feet, most high school and college ball from 60 feet 6 inches, with intermediate divisions at 50 or 54 feet. A 55 mph pitch from 46 feet gives the hitter about as much reaction time as a low-70s pitch from a full-size mound, which is why perceived velocity and measured velocity disagree.
- How it was measured. Radar readings taken near the release point are faster than readings taken near the plate, because the ball decelerates in flight. Two guns pointed at the same pitch can differ by several miles per hour.
- When in the season. Velocity is usually highest when a pitcher is fresh and well into a throwing progression, and lowest early in the spring or late in a long summer.
What actually adds velocity
For most young pitchers, growth does more than anything a coach can prescribe. Beyond that, the durable gains come from general athletic development rather than from throwing harder more often.
- Overall size, strength, and mobility, developed on a long timeline rather than in one offseason.
- Lower-half mechanics: a strong stride, a stable front leg, and hips that rotate before the shoulders.
- Consistent, moderate throwing volume year over year. Arm speed responds to steady work, not to weekly maximum-effort tests.
- Competing and playing other sports, which builds general athleticism and reduces the repetition load on one movement pattern.
The habit worth avoiding is chasing the readout. When a pitcher knows a number is coming, mechanics get sloppy and effort spikes, which shows up as noise in the data and stress on the arm.
Workload and rest
Every major youth baseball organization publishes pitch count limits and mandatory rest days by age. Follow whichever set your league uses, count pitches across every team a player throws for, and treat extended time away from competitive pitching each year as part of the plan rather than lost development.
