How to spike a volleyball harder
To hit a volleyball harder, contact the ball at the top of your reach and slightly in front of your hitting shoulder, swing with a high elbow and a relaxed, whip-like arm, and drive rotation through your hips and torso rather than muscling the arm. Most players gain more from timing and contact point than from strength.
Start with the approach
A good approach converts run-up speed into height and rotation, and it is the cheapest source of extra ball speed for most players. The last two steps do the work: a long penultimate step to lower your center of mass, then a quick close that plants both feet and swings both arms up.
Time the approach so you are rising into the ball, not reaching back for it. Hitters who arrive late end up contacting the ball behind their head, which caps how fast the hand can be moving in the direction the ball needs to go.
Fix your contact point
Contact height and position in front of the body matter more than raw arm strength. The ball should be struck at full extension, slightly in front of the hitting shoulder, with the arm nearly straight but not locked.
- Too low and you push the ball rather than swinging through it, and the angle over the net gets flat.
- Too far behind and you lose the shoulder rotation that carries most of the swing speed.
- Too far in front and you reach, which slows the hand right at the moment it should be fastest.
Swing faster, not harder
Ball speed follows hand speed at contact, and hand speed comes from a sequenced, relaxed swing rather than a tense one. The common cue is bow and arrow: as you rise, pull the non-hitting arm down and back while the hitting elbow stays high and the hand drops behind the head.
From there the sequence is elbow first, then forearm, then hand, finishing with the wrist snapping over the top of the ball. A tight arm fires everything at once and moves the hand slower than a loose one, which is why hitters who try to swing harder often measure slower.
Rotate through the hips and core
The arm is the last link in the chain, not the source. In the air, the hips and shoulders should rotate open as you load and then close hard through contact, transferring rotational speed outward to the hand.
If your torso stays square to the net through the whole swing, you are hitting with the arm alone and leaving speed on the table.

Jumping higher helps, indirectly
A higher jump does not add speed by itself, but it raises your contact point, which lets you swing through the ball at a better angle and gives you more room to accelerate the hand. Standard jump work for volleyball is progressive lower-body strength plus a modest amount of jump training, built up gradually rather than added all at once.
Volume is where people get hurt. Jump training is high impact, so treat it as skill work with quality reps and full recovery, not conditioning to grind through.
Verify the change actually worked
Technique changes usually feel wrong before they feel better, so feel is a poor judge of whether a change added speed. Film a set of hits with your current swing, make one change at a time, then film the same number of hits under the same conditions and compare.
