How to measure volleyball spike speed with your phone

Film the spike from the side, perpendicular to the ball's flight path, from roughly 15 to 25 feet away with the whole flight from contact to landing inside the frame. Use the highest frame rate your phone offers, keep the phone still, shoot in bright light, then trim the clip to the single hit before analyzing it.

What you need

A modern phone and a place to rest it. Nothing else is required, though a small tripod makes repeat sessions far more consistent.

Where to put the camera

Stand the camera to the side of the hitter so the ball travels across the frame rather than toward or away from the lens. Motion across the frame is what a video analyzer can measure; motion straight at the camera barely changes size from frame to frame and is much harder to read.

Back up far enough that contact and the first stretch of ball flight are both in shot. Too close and the ball leaves frame within a few frames of contact; too far and the ball is only a handful of pixels wide.

Frame rate matters more than resolution

A spiked ball crosses a lot of ground per frame, so the number of frames captured near contact sets the ceiling on accuracy. Prefer 120 or 240 frames per second slow motion over 4K at 30 frames per second.

Higher frame rates also mean shorter exposure per frame, which reduces the motion blur that smears a fast ball into a streak. If your phone lets you choose, 1080p at 120 or 240 fps is usually the best setting for this.

Approximate starting points. Adjust distance so the ball stays in frame from contact through the first bounce.

Light and background

Bright, even light gives the camera a short exposure and a sharp ball. Indoor gyms are usually the hardest case, so shoot with the lights fully on and avoid pointing the camera at windows or a bank of lights.

Backgrounds matter too. A ball against a plain wall or an empty court is easier to track than a ball against moving players, banners, or a bright window. If you can choose your side of the court, pick the one with the cleaner background behind the ball flight.

Trim to a single hit

Analysis works best when the clip contains exactly one attack. Record the rally, then trim so the clip starts a moment before the approach and ends shortly after the ball lands. Mark the contact frame if the tool asks for it, since that anchor is what the speed is measured from.

Keep it repeatable

The single biggest source of noise in phone-based measurement is changing the setup between sessions. If you want numbers you can compare week to week, fix everything you can.

  1. Mark the camera position on the floor with tape so you can return to it.
  2. Use the same phone and the same frame rate every time.
  3. Hit off the same kind of set, from the same position on the court.
  4. Measure several hits per session and compare your best or your median, not a single swing.

Do that and a change in the number means a change in your hitting, which is the entire point of measuring.
