How fast is a volleyball spike?

A hard volleyball spike travels roughly 40 to 60 mph (about 65 to 95 km/h) at the high school and club level, and roughly 65 to 80 mph (105 to 130 km/h) for elite professional men. Speed depends on jump height, contact point, arm speed, and how cleanly the ball is struck.

The ranges below are rough, widely cited approximations for the speed of the ball just after contact. Treat them as orientation, not as standards to hit.

What spike speed actually measures

Spike speed is the speed of the ball immediately after it leaves the hitter's hand, usually sampled over the first frames after contact before air resistance slows it down. It is not the same as the speed the ball crosses the net at, and it is not the same as serve speed, which is measured the same way but produced with a very different swing.

Because the ball decelerates from the moment of contact, where you sample matters. A number taken at contact will always be higher than one taken at the net, so comparisons are only fair when both numbers were captured the same way.

What makes a spike fast

Ball speed comes from how fast the hand is moving at contact and how much of that speed transfers into the ball. Four things dominate.

Topspin is a trade-off. Rolling the hand over the top of the ball adds spin that pulls the ball down inside the court, but a steeply brushed contact usually costs a little raw speed compared to a flat, through-the-middle strike.

How spike speed is measured

There are two practical approaches: a radar gun pointed down the ball's flight path, or video analysis that tracks the ball across frames and converts pixel movement into real-world speed.

Radar is the traditional method but needs the gun roughly in line with the ball's direction of travel, which is awkward in a gym. Video analysis works from a normal phone clip and has the advantage of also capturing contact height and spin, which a radar gun cannot see. Its accuracy depends on frame rate, camera angle, and having a known scale in the shot.

What counts as a good spike speed

For most players the useful comparison is not the table above but your own previous numbers. A recreational adult hitting in the 40s in mph is swinging hard; a varsity player breaking 55 is hitting well above their group. Session-to-session change under consistent filming conditions tells you far more about your progress than a single number compared against a professional.

If you do want to compare against others, keep the conditions fixed: same camera position, same ball, same kind of set, and measure a few hits rather than one lucky swing.
