Signs of sensory overload, and how a sensory profile is tracked
Sensory overload happens when incoming input outpaces what a person can process and filter. Common early signs are covering ears or eyes, increased stimming, irritability, seeking a smaller or darker space, going quiet, or asking to leave. Left to build, overload is one of the most frequent routes into a meltdown or a shutdown.
What sensory overload is
Overload is a capacity problem, not an attitude one. The same supermarket that is mildly annoying to one person can be genuinely painful to another, and the difference is in how the input is registered rather than in how much someone is trying to cope.
It also accumulates. A morning of fluorescent lights and a noisy classroom leaves less headroom for the afternoon, which is why hard moments so often cluster at the end of the day rather than at the moment the loudest thing happened. Overload is common in autistic people but not exclusive to them, and it varies day to day with sleep, illness, hunger and stress.
Early signs worth watching for
The signs that matter are the early ones, because that is the window where reducing input still works. They are individual, but they tend to be consistent for a given person.
- Covering ears, squinting, shielding eyes, or turning away from the source
- More stimming than usual, or a change in the kind of stimming
- Shorter answers, or speech becoming harder and then stopping
- Pacing, fidgeting, or needing to move
- Irritability over things that were fine an hour ago
- Looking for a smaller, darker, quieter place — under a table, behind a door
- Complaining of a headache, feeling sick, or "everything being too much"
- Going still and unresponsive, which is easy to mistake for calm
In teens and adults the same overload often shows up as sudden exhaustion, snappiness, or a strong urge to leave, and is frequently masked in public and paid for later in private.
The eight sensory systems
Most sensory profiles are organised around eight systems rather than the familiar five. Each one can be a seeker (looking for more input) or an avoider (finding input overwhelming), and the same person is commonly a seeker in one system and an avoider in another.

Interoception is the one most often overlooked and the one that explains the most. If hunger, thirst or a full bladder are not registering clearly, they still add load, and they frequently turn out to be the quiet ingredient behind a late-afternoon hard patch.
Environments that commonly cause trouble
Overload tends to cluster in a predictable set of places: supermarkets, school corridors and assemblies, parties, public transport, shopping centres, restaurants, swimming pools, and anywhere with hand dryers or tannoys.
What these share is unpredictable noise, hard reflective surfaces, crowding, bright artificial light, and no obvious exit. Knowing which of those specific ingredients matters for your child is more useful than knowing that "shops are hard", because it tells you what to change — headphones for the noise, a quieter time of day for the crowding, a planned exit for the trapped feeling.
What generally helps
The broadly accepted approach is to reduce input early and to accept that recovery takes real time. Prevention beats management: the point of a sensory profile is to spend less time in overload rather than to get better at handling it.
- Reduce what you can — noise, light, crowding — before the signs escalate.
- Allow the tools that work, including ear defenders, sunglasses, a hood, or a fidget.
- Do not interrupt stimming. It is regulation, and it is doing a job.
- Build in recovery after demanding environments rather than stacking activities.
- Prepare for known-hard places in advance, and agree an exit plan.
- Keep a small kit of what reliably helps, so it is available in the moment.

Tracking a sensory profile that is actually useful
Note the moment, the system involved, the environment, and whether it looked like seeking or avoiding. A few weeks of that produces something far more specific than a general sense that noise is difficult.
Log the good days too. Knowing which environments were fine is what lets you tell the difference between a bad place and a bad day. Pairing sensory notes with your ABC records of hard moments is what usually reveals the chain — a loud morning, a skipped lunch, then a small request that would have been fine at nine in the morning.
