How to Keep a Prayer Request Tracker
A prayer request tracker is a running record of what you asked, when you started, and how and when it was answered. It turns a prayer list from a list of needs into a history of God's faithfulness you can read back. It takes a few minutes a week on paper or none at all in an app. This guide covers what to record, a layout that works, and how to keep it going.
What to record for each request
| Column | What to write | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Date | The day you started praying. | Months later this is the line that shows how long you carried it. |
| Who | The person, family, church or situation. | So you can ask them how it went. |
| Request | The specific need, in a line. | A specific request can be seen to be answered; a vague one cannot. |
| Verse (optional) | A reference you are praying from. | It keeps prayer anchored to scripture rather than only to worry. |
| Updates | Dated notes: "surgery moved to the 14th". | Requests change while you pray; the update keeps the prayer current. |
| Answered | When, and how. | Including "no" and "not yet" and "differently than I asked". |
A paper layout that works
Keep the tracker separate from your daily list. The daily list is what you pray today; the tracker is the ledger. A simple table, one row per request, with the six columns above, is enough. The printable prayer journal pages include a request tracker page with date, request, verse and answered columns, ruled and ready to print, and the small-group request sheet does the same for a group with a name column.
- New request: add a row the day you say "I'll pray for you". Date first.
- Weekly: read the open rows. Write any update you know of, with its date.
- Answered: fill in the answered column with the date and a sentence of how. Then highlight the row or tick it, so open and answered requests are easy to tell apart.
- Yearly: read the answered rows from start to end. Many people do this at New Year or on a birthday.
Recording answers honestly
A tracker that only records the yeses is not a record; it is a highlight reel. Write the answers as they came:
- Yes: "Got the warehouse job, 12 March."
- Differently: "Did not sell the house; the renters turned out to be a gift."
- Not yet: leave it open and keep praying, and add an update so you know it is still alive.
- No: "Grandpa Lou died 2 June. Peaceful, at home, family with him." Grief belongs in the record too, and so does what you were given in it.
- Unknown: you lost touch. Close it with a note rather than leaving it open for years.
For a small group or church
A group tracker needs one keeper. At the start of each meeting the keeper reads the open requests, asks for updates and writes the answers in; new requests are added at the end. Ask before you write anything private down, and never share a group's tracker beyond the group. How to run a small-group prayer list has more on the weekly rhythm.
Why bother
The Psalms keep returning to remembering: "I will remember the deeds of the Lord" (Psalm 77:11). Israel set up stones at the Jordan so their children would ask what they meant (Joshua 4). A prayer request tracker is a paper version of those stones: when you are discouraged, it is the evidence, in your own handwriting, that prayers were heard.
How Knelt tracks prayer requests. Knelt is a private prayer journal and prayer list app that keeps the tracker for you. Every request records the date you added it, how many times you prayed it, how many days you have carried it, and dated updates. Mark it answered with how, and it moves to the Answered page, newest first, with the number of days you carried it; re-open it if it was not finished. Look Back (Knelt Plus) shows what you prayed a year ago today, what has gone quiet and the stones of remembrance from this year, and the answered-prayer book exports the record as a PDF. No account; it stays on your phone.
