What Temperature Should a Cold Plunge Be?

Most cold plunges land somewhere around 10-15 C (50-59 F), with ice baths often run colder at roughly 3-10 C (38-50 F). Beginners do well starting warmer, near 15-20 C (59-68 F). Colder is not automatically better: the water only has to be cold enough that staying in takes deliberate, controlled breathing.

Typical temperature bands

These are the conservative ranges you will see repeated across cold-exposure practice. Any tub, lake, or shower that puts you in the right band is doing the job — the number on the thermometer matters less than what you do with it.

Colder water is a bigger dose, not a better one

Cold exposure works on something like temperature multiplied by time. Dropping from 12 C to 5 C is a substantial increase in dose on its own, so it has to be paid for with a shorter sit — not celebrated with a longer one.

Chasing the lowest achievable number is the most common way people turn a manageable habit into an unpleasant one they quit. The practical rule is to change one variable at a time: get comfortable at a temperature first, extend duration modestly, and only then go colder — resetting the clock back down when you do.

How cold is too cold?

There is no universal cutoff, but the colder the water the smaller the margin for error. Below roughly 5 C, the cold shock response is severe, hands stop working sooner than you expect, and the time between "fine" and "in trouble" shrinks considerably. That is not a reason to never go there; it is a reason to go there with a spotter, a short timer, and an easy exit.

Two things matter more than the reading on the thermometer:

Measuring it, and why the reading drifts

Use an actual thermometer rather than a guess — cold water all feels roughly the same to a hand, and people routinely estimate several degrees off. Measure at the depth you will sit in, and measure right before you get in.

Expect drift. Ice added on top produces a cold layer near the surface and warmer water beneath it, so stir before reading. Water also warms noticeably while you are in it, which is why a tub that read 6 C at the start may be a couple of degrees warmer by the end of a five-minute sit. Logging the starting temperature consistently, in the same way each time, is what makes your own history comparable.

Ice baths, showers, and open water

A cold shower is a legitimate cold source, though most home water lines sit above true plunge temperature and the exposure is partial. It is an excellent place to start, and a fine substitute when travelling.

A tub with bagged ice gets you into the standard band without special equipment; a chest-freezer conversion or a chiller holds the temperature steady, which is mostly a convenience benefit. Open water in winter can be very cold and comes with its own risks — current, uneven exit points, and no way to stop the exposure quickly. Treat it as the advanced option, never do it alone, and know how you are getting out before you get in.

When to avoid cold plunging entirely

Cold immersion raises heart rate and blood pressure sharply, which makes it a poor fit for some people. Talk to a doctor before starting if you have a heart condition, an arrhythmia, uncontrolled high blood pressure, a history of fainting or seizures, Raynaud's phenomenon or cold urticaria, are pregnant, or are on medication that affects your heart or circulation. Skip sessions when you are ill, and do not plunge after drinking.
