Signs of a Queenless Hive: How to Confirm and What to Do
The most reliable sign of a queenless hive is no eggs and no young larvae on two inspections about a week apart. Supporting signs include emergency queen cells, a loud roaring hum, a shrinking population, and eventually laying workers producing scattered drone brood in worker cells.
The signs, most reliable first
Not seeing the queen means very little on its own; experienced beekeepers fail to spot a laying queen all the time. Rank what you see by how hard it is to explain any other way.
- No eggs and no young larvae. The strongest single indicator. Eggs mean a queen was laying within about the last three days.
- Emergency queen cells on the face of the comb. Cells built out of ordinary worker cells in the middle of a frame are the colony trying to replace a queen it has lost. Cells hanging off the bottom bar are more typically swarm cells.
- Capped brood present but nothing younger. This dates the loss: the colony had a laying queen recently, and stopped.
- Laying workers. Multiple eggs per cell, eggs stuck to cell walls rather than centred at the bottom, and domed drone cappings on worker-sized cells. This is a late-stage sign.
- Behaviour and population. A queenless colony often has an agitated, higher-pitched roar, gets defensive, and gradually shrinks with no new brood replacing dying foragers.
The brood timeline behind the test
The two-visit test works because bee development runs on a fixed clock. Knowing it lets you date a queen loss from what is and is not on the frames.

Days are counted from the egg being laid, and they shift slightly with temperature and stock. Practically: if you see capped worker brood but nothing uncapped, the queen likely stopped laying more than nine days ago.
How to confirm over two inspections
Do not requeen on a single inspection. Check again in about seven days and look specifically for eggs and larvae under three days old, tilting the frame so light reaches the cell bottoms. If both visits show no eggs and no young larvae, the colony is almost certainly queenless or has a queen that is not laying.
Allow for the honest exceptions. A colony that recently swarmed, was split, or superseded may have a virgin queen who has not started laying yet. From a capped queen cell it commonly takes roughly three to four weeks before a new queen emerges, mates, and lays reliably, so a broodless gap in that window is normal rather than alarming.
The frame-of-eggs test
The classic diagnostic is to give the suspect colony a frame of open brood and eggs from a healthy hive. If the colony starts drawing emergency queen cells on it within a few days, it considers itself queenless. If it simply raises the brood, there is a queen in there somewhere.
The same frame is also a fix in itself: a queenright colony can raise its own replacement from those eggs, though the resulting queen takes weeks to come into lay and the colony loses a brood cycle in the meantime.
When it is laying workers
If the colony has been queenless long enough, worker ovaries develop and workers begin laying unfertilised eggs, which produce only drones. The giveaways are several eggs per cell, eggs on cell walls, and bullet-shaped drone cappings in worker comb. Laying-worker colonies rarely accept a new queen, so most beekeepers combine them with a strong queenright colony instead of trying to requeen.
What to do next
- Introduce a mated queen. The fastest fix, and the one that costs the fewest brood cycles. Follow the supplier's introduction method and give the colony time to accept her.
- Give a frame of eggs. Cheapest option, and it doubles as a test, but it costs weeks.
- Combine. A weak or laying-worker colony is often better merged into a strong queenright hive than propped up.
- Do nothing yet, if there is a virgin. If the timeline says a new queen should be mating, close up and check again in a week.
Whichever you choose, note the date and the queen's age. Queen age is one of the most useful fields in any inspection record, because it drives both requeening decisions and swarm risk.
