When emailing about a bug, please include your device model, iOS/Android version, and a short description of what you were doing when it happened. Screenshots help a lot. Please don't include sensitive details about your child you'd rather keep private — we don't need them to help, and your data stays on your device.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Nello, exactly?
Nello is a calm, strengths-based, local-first companion for parents of autistic kids — and for autistic teens and adults tracking themselves. You log behaviors, meltdowns, sensory moments and wins in seconds; Nello finds the patterns behind the hard days, builds a calm kit, and helps you share your child's needs with a sitter, teacher, or doctor. It's neurodiversity-affirming throughout: we use the rainbow-infinity, never a puzzle piece, and treat stimming as regulation. Nello is not a diagnosis and not therapy.
How does the meltdown decoder (ABC) work?
When a meltdown happens, you capture it as Antecedent → Behavior → Consequence (ABC) in under a minute — what led up to it, what happened, and what helped afterward. Over time, Nello looks across your logs to surface patterns (for example, "78% of meltdowns follow transitions without warning") with a triggers chart and calm-kit suggestions. The pattern insights are part of Nello+ and are computed entirely on your device.
Can an autistic person use Nello to track themselves?
Yes. Nello includes a self-tracking mode so autistic teens and adults can track themselves, not just be tracked. You can note your sensory seekers and avoiders, what helps you regulate, the hard moments, and the wins — in affirming, strengths-based language.
What's in the calm kit?
The calm kit is your child's (or your own) personalized list of what actually helps — dim lights, deep pressure, a favorite song, a quiet space. You build it once so it's one tap away in a crisis, when it's hardest to think. Stimming is regulation, so it belongs in the kit too.
How do I share with a sitter, teacher, or doctor (care-circle & advocate report)?
With Nello+, you can generate a care-circle snapshot — a shareable PDF of the profile and calm kit for a sitter or teacher — and a one-page advocate/IEP report (PDF) for the pediatrician, specialist, or school meeting. Both are created on your device and opened in your device's share sheet; nothing is uploaded to us. There's no backend and no live invite — you share the file yourself, however you like.
Where is my data stored? Is anything uploaded?
Nello is local-first. All of your data — profiles, daily logs, ABC meltdown records, sensory notes, wins, calm kit, schedules, notes, and reports — is stored only in a private database on your phone. There is no account and no cloud backend, and your child's data never leaves your device. The only information that ever leaves your phone is purchase/subscription data needed to validate Nello+ (handled by Apple, Google, and RevenueCat). See our Privacy Policy for full details.
How does the on-device AI weekly digest work, and what's the download?
The Nello+ weekly digest turns your own logs into a plain-language read on "what made this week hard vs good" — non-diagnostic and affirming. It runs a small language model entirely on your phone. To keep the app's install size small, the model isn't bundled; it's downloaded only if you opt in the first time you use the feature (roughly 500 MB). After that it works offline, and your child's data is never sent anywhere to produce the digest. On devices that can't run the model, the feature is simply hidden and the rest of the app is unaffected.
How do I export or back up my data?
You can export your data and create a local backup from within the app (CSV/PDF), then save or share the file yourself. Because everything lives on your device, keeping your own backup is the best way to move to a new phone or recover after a reset.
How do I delete my data?
Because everything is stored on your device, you're in full control. You can delete individual entries in the app, clear the app's data from within the app or your device settings, or uninstall the app to permanently remove all of its locally stored data. There is no server-side copy for us to delete.
What does Nello+ include, and what does it cost?
Nello's core tracking, calm kit, and full accessibility are free forever — no card needed to explore. Nello+ adds pattern insights, the on-device AI weekly digest, care-circle PDF sharing, the advocate/IEP report, and unlimited kids + history. Plans are: Monthly — $3.99/month, Annual — $19.99/year (recommended), and a one-time Lifetime — $39.99. All three unlock the same features. Prices may vary by region and are shown in the app at purchase.
How do I manage or cancel my subscription?
Subscriptions are billed through your App Store or Google Play account — we can't trap you. On iOS: open the Settings app → tap your name → Subscriptions → Nello. On Android: open Google Play → tap your profile → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → Nello. Cancellation takes effect at the end of your current billing period. (The Lifetime purchase is one-time and never renews.)
How do I restore my purchase on a new device?
Sign in with the same Apple ID or Google account you used to purchase, open Nello, and use the "Restore Purchases" option in settings. Your Nello+ entitlement will be restored. (Note: your logs are stored locally, so to move your data to a new device, use the in-app export/backup.)
Does Nello work offline?
Yes. Because your data lives on your device, logging, the meltdown decoder, the calm kit, schedules, and report generation all work without an internet connection — and the app opens instantly with no login. A connection is only needed to make or restore a purchase, or for the one-time on-device AI model download if you opt in.
Is Nello a diagnosis or therapy?
No. Nello is a self-tracking and organization tool that gently informs. It does not diagnose autism or any other condition, does not provide therapy, and is not a substitute for professional medical, psychological, developmental, or educational advice. It stays neutral on therapy modalities. Always consult a qualified professional, and if you think you or your child is in danger or having an emergency, call your local emergency number immediately.
